Excerpt from book Elephants Up Close

Young male elephants usually suffer from a glandular condition called musth. Musth is a word derived from the Hindi "masthi" which means intoxicated. During this period the temporal glands on either side of the head above the cheekbones discharge a thick dark substance. As the liquid drips down the cheeks and enters the mouth it becomes restless and sexually active. The scent of musth attracts the female.
