Excerpt from book Elephants Up Close:
Millions of years of evolution have led to an appendage extraordinaire. The elephant's trunk is a blend of lip and nose. It is made of flesh, muscle, fat, nerves, blood and connective tissue and can weight up to 140 kg. The trunk serves as a nose for smelling, hand for caressing and greeting, an extra foot, a signaling device, a tool for gathering food, and a dusting and digging device. It is powerful enough to uproot a tree, yet dexterous enough to pick a blade of grass.
